what do i say here? it's been over a week since the TMAs and the buzz has buzzed out... but the TMAs havent. lets see.
my night of glitz and glamour began after i left the emotionally and intellectually touching Sajid and Zeeshan press conference held at the Pearl Continental. mum had prepared a last minute outfit for me —plain black (black&white was the dress code of the event) shalwar kemeez umm.... silver and black lace around the neckline and some on line of the shalwar from where the frills start— simple, but that suited me. had a simple sterling silver necklace to go with it. with mum, myself and my younger sister trying to do me up all at once, with the electrician turning off power now and then...in the midst of all the craziness and yelling and completely feaking out, i managed to get to the TMA venue around 45 minutes later then the requested time.
bumped into cousin and other media-related acquaintances. had chat with assistant editor of She (Qasim, he liked to introduce himself as "the he from She", he's a complete jaan). met up with the friends-first-rockstars-later and looked for excuses to have some more of the pineapple+lemonade-y type drinks that were being served.
had one with Qasim,
one with Hash, (btw, found out his real name is Hashim & is not a junkie. very sweet person)
and one with Hammad (cousin of s&z).
ended up getting seated with the editor and 2 writers of a certain publication who spent the entire evening in extreme hyperactive-girl-fake-giggles state... if you know what i mean. making the person to whom the giggles were directed extremely uncomfortable. the good thing was on the other side of me i had Omar Sheikh from EMI, who turned out to have an amazing sense of humour and with whom i could converse somewhat intelligently. and enjoy in the real sense of the word.
i'm not saying that you cant enjoy being hyperactive. i'm just talking about being 'real'. get up and go hyper when you feel it.
i will not go into the details of who won and who didn't. on a personal note, i felt that the best upcoming band/singer award should have been given to abbas ali khan rather then to kaavish (does it matter that kaavish's lead singer's mum was one of the jury members?). i mean, abbas ali khan has three hit videos to bost + an entire album, whereas kaavish has released 2 videos out of which one recieved note because of the concept used. this does not mean that the kaavish song bachpan isn't good. it is. in fact it's very good. but they still had much to do before winning the particular award that they did.
cousin got her 15 seconds of fame when she presented an award with adnan somebody (television personality. i'm sorry but i'm really bad with names. this person also came on the me, myself and faizan show on IM) made everyone notice her put her j.lo act on and we both laughed hysterically over the "15 seconds" bit later.
moved to the front when alamgir was about to perform. i'll be honest, other then and albela rahi and dekha na tha (and that too because i've sung the latter in many many weddings), i had not previously been acquainted with much of alamgir's work. i loved the song he did in bengali. it was beautiful and it was heartening to see a person, even at his age, deliver the high-powered performance that he did.
at the after-party... looked around and saw familiar faces everywhere but that somehow proved to unsettle me rather then put me at ease. got a simple coke-a-cola and spent some time sitting, conversing or giving company to those keeping an eye on the dance-floor.
when asked why i wasn't dancing, i replied "look around you, these are people that i work with. i cant show them my thumkas. this is work, literally. just isn't right".
i left for home soon after. wishing i hadn't really gone to the after party. seeing the shallow-ness of it all was... then again, unsettling. i dont want to go into details.
the funny thing is, the after party was also a bit of a shocker for someone else as well. although in a different way.
